THE GAY GOGGLES

Did anyone else frowned at this the way I did? This is going to take the quote out of its context that I don’t know of, and put it into the context of every time I’ve heard that sentence or something similar said around me in RL or in fandom: ”Once you put on the gay goggles anybody can be gay!”

As opposed to what? No, really, anybody can be gay with or without goggles, in fictional as in real life. I say this as someone who has said these very things before, who stood there and glee-ed at how shounen-ai made me see gay-gay-gay everywhere and found it funny. But I think that was another proof of me being an ass, and I’d love to have had a serious talk about the fiction-to-RL transposition here. 

When we’re not living it every day, we get to ignore the way other people see their world and given media, or are forced to twist it every day, so as to see a reflection of themselves in them the same way everyone else does without thinking. That a class/meta/getting into yaoi/fandom is able to make us see these things, however briefly and in very particular contexts, is a great step and for many of us the first one I think. We shouldn’t stop there though.

Because after a while, we realise that non-queer people (or people living as such) have the every day privilege of being able to ignore and erase other people’s identity and need to put on metaphorical goggles to be able to comprehend that queer people actually exist and are just like everybody else ergo could be anybody and everybody. And that, just like real glasses, they can simply remove those goggles at their convenience and forget about all this when it comes to, say, real people instead of lols-y analysis of old books/tv shows/what have you - and vice-versa.

That’s how we get people shipping Kon/Tim lamenting that it’s a bad or weak thing there’s canon gay superheroes; or queer fanpersons calling delusional other fans who truly believe Sherlock could be queer; or some saying “bromance” or word-of-God is enough and people requesting something canon are pushy; or that show-runners would be lowering themselves to cater to fangirls whenever there’s the slightest queer validation…

These aren’t one-comment in a lifetime unfortunate wordings. These are all things I’ve seen pass on my dashboard or in comments to friends since the few months I’ve been on tumblr. It shows a discordance with how we view and accept RL and fictonal queerness, and how we view and accept others who have or wish for a different perception of a reality (or source) we share. It’s not very far from the discordance of “queers are fine, but not in the family” line, or “it’s fine if not in public” - and that it’s as great yet insufficient.

See see we need to resurrect the femmeslash kink meme (there was one at one point, right?) and it needs to actually be a KINK meme, not a place where vanilla plot bunnies go to breed. 

I am so down with this!  Was there ever specifically a femslash kink meme for Merlin, or is it just the odd vanilla prompt that would show up on kinkme_merlin, where half the time it would have guys involved as well?  We should totes have something just for the women… We’re apparently a very kinky group of people, and our fantastic actresses endorse it!  Let’s do this thing!

As far as I know, there has been only one Merlin femslash kink meme in Merlin fandom so far, and it was hosted on gwenmorganabbc@LJ. Merlin femslash fanworks have been created for other pan-fandom memes or kinky fests though: in porn battles, kink_bingo’s merlin tag, such-height’s DW female character trope fest, etc. On tumblr, the only Merlin femslash fest I’ve known of has been fuckyeahmerlinfemslash’s exchange a few months back, which of course you already know about considering you are one of the fantastic runners. 

It would be awesome if another (temporary or not) meme or prompt fest opened. I personally don’t feel like tumblr is the most convivial place to hold things requiring lots of exchanges, and might propose it opens on DW instead, and, please please please please did I mention PLEASE do not make it fic only. Those are my two cents. ;P

This fanart’s storytelling is fantastic. I’m a sucker for these hurt/comfort kind of plot in art, and that hit noticing the hammer’s implication gives. I really love how you dealt with the blood affecting the different materials, the clothes and hair flow, and how you balanced the bright colours in their costumes. 

(And this is something I think we don’t do often sometimes in comments, the reassuring, but if you are like many of us and was wondering about the bg, if that striping buildings trick to make windows works well - well, yes, it really does, along with the greying steps of the different backgrounds the further we go and all that. It’s simple and effective and all done great. Maybe this all make more sense in my head, but basically, thumbs up for plot and execution both.)
